Make a list of what scares you about having, and NOT having, this conversation.

INTENTION Identify and communicate your intention for having the conversation.

INQUIRY Get their perspective by opening the conversation

INFORMATION Use the Button Technique: Don’t talk about the shirt, talk about the button. For example “You’re not being inclusive.” VS In our brainstorming meeting on X, you didn’t ask everyone for their thoughts.”

Demonstrate you’re listening

Restate what you heard:

“So, I hear XYZ.”

Label feelings:

“It sounds like you’re frustrated.”  

Check for alignment:

“Did I get that right?” 

After

Check in

Follow through on commitment, check in with the other person, and reflect on lessons learned. 

Learn & Burn

Jot down what went wrong, extract the learning, and let go of everything else.

What was the failure?

Can I learn from it?

If so, What?

If not, burn!
